چکیده

The paradigm shift from an information sharing infrastructure (i.e., the Web) to a resource sharing infrastructure (i.e., the Grid) has boosted the development of a new generation of online services. In particular, Grid services are stateful, dynamic and operate in a secure environment. Therefore they offer capabilities that are essential to remote collaboration. In this paper, we tackle the problem of bootstrapping and supporting a collaborative environment over a Grid infrastructure. As we target communities of non computer-literate people, we investigate easy-to-use and flexible solutions. As a result, we developed the Grid Shared Desktop (GSD) a Grid-based, Webaccessible environment that provides members of a virtual community with a set of desktops supporting collaboration in both synchronous and asynchronous mode. A desktop is a familiar tool allowing users to interact with graphical representations of concepts. Thus, the GSD is a powerful interface to communicate these representations and build collaborative knowledge. In this paper, we propose an overall architecture and an implementation of the GSD including a bundled set of bootstrapping services required to set up and maintain a collaboration activity among distant participants. Finally, we summarise the results of recent experiments conducted with the GSD deployed in the concrete context of collaborative construction of a shared repository of knowledge.

The Grid Shared Desktop for CSCL

The Grid Shared Desktop (GSD) is a collaborative environment that provides a multidimensional humans-to-machine-to-humans interface by the means of multiples cleverly intricated desktops. The GSD is a platform independent solution that benefits of the intrinsic advantages of the Grid technology such as scalability and security. In order to verify that our GSD solution meets CSCL requirements, w...

A Survey of Desktop Grid System Scheduling

Grid Computing forms virtual, collaborative organizations that share applications and data in an open heterogeneous server environment in order to work on common problems. Desktop Grid is a named collection of machines in a shared network where resource providers have heterogeneous properties such as CPU, network, memory complicated by various capabilities, failures, lack of trust based on desk...

Distributed and Collaborative Visualization

Visualization is a powerful tool for analysing data and presenting results in science, engineering and medicine. This paper reviews ways in which it can be used in distributed and/or collaborative enviroments. Distributed visualization addresses a number of resource allocation problems, including the location of processing close to data for the minimization of data traffic. The advent of the Gr...

Enabling Co-located Ad-hoc Collaboration on Shared Displays

All major desktop environments are designed around the assumption of having a single system cursor and a single keyboard. Co-located multi-user interaction on a standard desktop requires users to physically hand over the devices. Existing collaboration applications require complicated and limiting setups and no collaboration application or toolkit supports ad-hoc transition from a traditional s...
